Mental-health resources
For participants of Seeking Ends Here
EMERGENCIES
If you are going through a mental-health crisis, having suicidal thoughts or thinking of harming yourself in any way, get help now.
- Call your local emergency number, for example 911 in the United States and Canada, 112 across the European Union, or 999 in the United Kingdom.
- Call your country's crisis or suicide-prevention line. In Argentina it is 135, free, anonymous and open 24 hours.
- Go to the nearest hospital or emergency department.
WHEN TO STOP MEDITATING
If you notice any of these during or after meditating, STOP THE PRACTICE and consider seeking help:
- Intense anxiety or panic attacks
- A marked rise in stress
- Very unpleasant physical sensations that do not ease
- Disturbing intrusive thoughts
- A sense of depersonalisation or derealisation
- Overwhelming emotions you cannot handle
- Severe insomnia
- Any distress that lasts after the practice ends
About non-dual practices in particular
Non-dual meditation practices, like the ones taught at Seeking Ends Here, can bring more intense experiences than conventional meditation. Some people go through what contemplative traditions call the "dark night of the soul": a stage of deep disorientation, loss of the ordinary sense of self, or radical questioning of the meaning of existence.
These experiences are known and studied, but they can be disturbing. If you go through them, you are not alone, and it matters to have proper professional support.
What to do if you feel unwell:
1. Pause the practice for a while. It is not a failure. It is a wise, self-caring decision. Meditation will be there when you are ready.
2. Seek professional help. A psychologist or psychiatrist can help you. Some offer fees adjusted to what you can pay.
3. Write to Seeking Ends Here. Tell me if you are having difficulties. I can suggest further resources. You are not alone in this.
HOW TO FIND A MENTAL-HEALTH PROFESSIONAL
- Your doctor or public health service. They can refer you to mental-health care, often free or at low cost.
- Your health insurance. Most plans cover psychological care; check its list of providers.
- Private practice. Some professionals offer reduced fees or sliding scales.
MEDITATION-SPECIFIC HELP
Cheetah House: www.cheetahhouse.org
An organisation specialised in meditation-related difficulties. It keeps a list of professionals who work with difficult contemplative experiences.
REMEMBER
- Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness
- Meditation is a tool, but it is not for everyone at every moment
- Your wellbeing comes first
- If something does not feel right, trust your instinct and seek support
